Climate Change Is a Health Crisis: How a Changing Climate Is Affecting Our Health

When we hear “climate change,” many of us immediately think about melting glaciers, rising sea levels, or extreme weather.
But climate change is affecting something much closer to home: our health.
A hotter and less predictable climate means more people are exposed to extreme heat, changing patterns of infectious diseases, food and water insecurity, air pollution, and growing pressure on healthcare systems.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 3.6 billion people already live in areas highly vulnerable to climate change. WHO also estimates that climate change could cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths each year between 2030 and 2050 from a limited group of causes, including heat exposure, malaria, diarrhoeal disease, and childhood undernutrition.
And this is not just a problem for the future. It is happening now.

☀️ A Hotter Planet Means Greater Health Risks

Think about the last time you experienced an unusually hot day. For some people, extreme heat is more than uncomfortable—it can be dangerous.
Heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and potentially fatal heatstroke. It can also worsen cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney conditions.
WHO estimates that approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths occurred globally each year between 2000 and 2019.
Older adults, young children, people living with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers are among those most vulnerable.

🦟 Climate Change Can Change Where Diseases Spread

Climate and infectious diseases are closely connected.
Mosquitoes and other disease vectors are sensitive to temperature and rainfall. As environmental conditions change, the areas and seasons in which diseases such as malaria and dengue can spread may also change.
Climate change does not automatically cause an outbreak. But it can create more favourable conditions for transmission.
That is why strong disease surveillance and early-warning systems are becoming increasingly important. The IPCC has found evidence that climate change has already affected the distribution and transmission of several vector-borne diseases.

💧 When Water and Food Become Health Issues

Water and food are basic needs—but climate change can make both harder to secure.
Flooding can contaminate water sources and damage sanitation systems, increasing the risk of diarrhoeal and other waterborne diseases.
Drought brings a different challenge: less water, less food, and greater pressure on already vulnerable communities.
The 2024 Lancet Countdown reported that climate-related heat and drought were associated with an estimated 151 million additional people experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity across 124 countries in 2022.
For children, repeated food insecurity and undernutrition can affect growth, development, and the body's ability to fight infection.

🧠 The Impact Is Not Only Physical

Climate change can also affect how people feel, think, and cope.
Imagine losing your home to a flood, losing livestock during a drought, being forced to leave your community, or worrying about whether your family will have enough food and water.
These experiences can leave lasting psychological effects, including anxiety, stress, grief, and trauma.
The IPCC recognizes climate change as a growing threat to mental health, particularly following extreme weather events and the loss of livelihoods.

🏥 What Happens to Our Hospitals?

Now imagine a major flood hitting a city.
At the very moment when more people need medical care, roads may become inaccessible, electricity may fail, water systems may be damaged, and healthcare facilities may struggle to function.
This creates a dangerous double burden:
More people need healthcare → while healthcare systems themselves are under pressure.
That is why climate-resilient hospitals, emergency preparedness, and strong disease-surveillance systems are becoming essential parts of public health.

🌍 The People at Greatest Risk Are Often the Least Responsible

Climate change does not affect everyone equally.
People living in poverty or in areas with limited access to healthcare, safe housing, clean water, sanitation, and reliable infrastructure often face the greatest risks.
WHO reports that mortality from extreme weather events over the previous decade was 15 times higher in highly vulnerable regions than in regions with very low vulnerability.
This makes climate change more than an environmental issue.
It is an issue of health equity.

🌱 What Can We Do?

There is reason for hope.
Many actions that protect the climate also protect our health.
Cleaner energy can reduce harmful air pollution.
Better public transportation and walkable communities can reduce emissions while encouraging physical activity.
Stronger water and sanitation systems can prevent disease.
Early-warning systems can give communities time to prepare for extreme weather.
Climate-resilient hospitals can continue providing essential services during emergencies.
And climate-informed disease surveillance can help public-health teams identify risks earlier and respond faster.

The Bottom Line

Climate change is no longer something public health can simply prepare for in the distant future. Its health effects are already being felt by communities around the world.
Public health must move beyond reacting to climate-related emergencies and focus increasingly on anticipation, prevention, preparedness, and resilience.
That means strengthening surveillance and early-warning systems, preparing healthcare facilities for climate hazards, engaging communities, and making sure the people most at risk are not left behind.


The time to act is now. Because stronger climate action today means healthier and more resilient communities tomorrow.
